Fire Emblem Engage Lapis is a Japanese-style Strategic Role Playing Game (SRPG) franchise by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo. The game was initially released on the NES in 1990, and has since been ported and re-released on multiple platforms, most notably on the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch.
Fire Emblem Engage Lapis follows a grid-based movement system familiar to many turn-based strategy games, with the player and enemy having the freedom to move, attack, dodge, and use items within their own phase. To progress, the player leads a party of characters across the game’s numerous stages while battling enemy parties. Combat relies heavily on the use of rock-paper-scissors-like weapon triage, which dictates the effectiveness of attack and defense with relation to the enemy’s weapon type. Successful completion of stages will give rewards in the form of gold, and experience points that can be distributed to characters and their associated classes.
The game’s story follows a group of adventurers on a journey to regain the fabled Fire Emblem from the control of the nefarious the King of Rigel. After the kingdom of Archanea falls to the King, the protagonist—Principle Lord Ryōma—sets out on a mission to obtain the Fire Emblem and restore the kingdom of Archanea to its former glory. On their quest, the group makes friends and enemies alike, as well as encountering several supernatural occurrences.
