The Dead Space franchise is a science fiction survival horror video game series developed by Visceral Games. The series first began in 2008 with Dead Space and since then, has inspired 3 sequels, each of which offer different levels of horror and intensity.
The first installment, Dead Space, revolves around an engineer named Isaac Clarke journeying to a distant planet in the wake of a horrific discovery. Players encouter numerous Necromorphs, which are mutated humans infected with a virus capable of reanimating their remains. The game leaves players with plenty of jump scares and fear as they battle to survive through the ship and complete the mission.
Dead Space 2 takes place three years after the original game, with Isaac Clarke being granted access to the fearsome Sprawl. The Sprawl is an immense space station built on Earth’s moon, and serves as the location of this installment. Players navigate through the station and make their way through an even more intense atmosphere of horror and suspense.
The final installment of the Dead Space series is set on the ice planet of Tau Volantis. Here, players discover a planet that is home to the mysterious Marker that has been creating the deathly Necromorphs. Following a thrilling plot, players are put up against an even more dangerous form of Necromorph; the Nexus.
It is hard to pin down the best installment of the Dead Space franchise as each game has unique features that make it stand out amongst the rest. However, for experiencing a climactic plot it may be best to start with Dead Space as it will make playing the other titles much more impactful and disturbing.
